The Currency Museum

The Currency Museum, also known as the Numismatic Museum, is located in Cap-Haitien. It was inaugurated in 2012 by the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH).

Its mission is to highlight the Haitian numismatic heritage. It presents all the coins and banknotes that have circulated in the country, from the period before the arrival of Europeans in America to the contemporary period. The collection shows to the visitors the path that the Haitian monetary unit has gone through.

The collection is focused mainly on the Gourde, whose name comes from "Peso Gordo" in Spanish, which means: heavyweight. Each banknote and each coin is accompanied by a historical description. Tourists can have access to the museum during free guided tours, Monday to Friday, from 10h AM to 3h PM.
